Itinerary: O1 - Olbia Based - ALGHERO PLUS QUICK TASTE OF NUORO PROVINCE - Days: 3

Alghero

This short Itinerary allows an overnight visit to the Catalan influenced town of Alghero and then packs in a rapid but good introduction to the Province of Nuoro allowing a wander around the riverside medieval town of Bosa, an overnight stop in the Provincial Capital of Nuoro itself with time for a visit to the renowned Costume Museum and an opportunity to taste the local cooking, a few hours spent exploring the Murals of the somewhat notorious town of Orgosolo, before returning again to Olbia. Transport is by way of both Bus and train and includes the spectacular coast road from Alghero to Bosa.

Total transport cost for the Itinerary would be around Euro 35 per person (Jun 2005).

The only travel day which would be possible on Sundays is Day 1. Day 3 can be modified to function on Sundays but it would not be ideal.

The following provides a day by day description of the itinerary idea, including also tables indicating the various stages of travel for each day. These tables do not contain the actual departure and arrival times of each leg of the journey which must be accessed directly from the web sites of the individual transport providers. Links are provided to the front pages of the relevant sites, and some notes are provided here which explain how we accessed the relevant timetable information from the sites which do not have English translations.

You can make a print of this itinerary description and fill in the relevant arrival and departure times for each leg in the spaces provided.

Before deciding to follow any one of the Itineraries or suggestions in this site we strongly recommend that you read also the sections contained herein on
Suggestions and Hints, News, and General Disclaimer.

An early bus to Sassari from where you can select from several different departures (either bus or train) for the leg to Alghero. Aim to arrive as early as possible in Alghero thus leaving the best part of the day (and all the night) to enjoy all that this well developed and serviced ocean front tourist destination has to offer.

Day 2- ALGHERO PLUS QUICK TASTE OF NUORO PROVINCE
The stages of the journey for this day are shown in the table below. To obtain the actual departure and arrival times for each stage, use the links and the information included in accessing timetables.

Arrive Nuoro

Day 2 starts with a bus trip following the stunningly scenic coastal route South from Alghero down to the medieval town of Bosa. For rugged coastal panoramas this is one of the better stretches of road in Sardinia, passing also through the area home to the rare Griffon Vulture which nests in the cliffs high above the road.

Bosa

The stop in Bosa of a few hours can be pleasantly spent wandering through the medieval section of town including a climb up to the 11th century castle overlooking the town. Even when the castle is closed (approx. November to March) it is still worth the climb to walk around Via Nino Gavino which runs around the base of the castle and provides good views up the valley of the river Temo, across the top of the medieval quarter, and down the valley to the ocean and the Spanish watch tower.

In and around the medieval quarter are several shops selling artifacts and souvenirs however be aware that many of these shops shut around 12:30 which in any case leaves sufficient time for a leisurely café at one of the bars in Piazza Costituzione before returning to Piazza Zanetti for the bus to Macomer.

A brief change of transport at Macomer and you board the small narrow gauge train departing around 14:30

Nuoro

which serves some of the remoter communities of the Marghine area for the trip to Nuoro. This leg of the journey is quite pleasant passing through countryside dotted with groves of cork and olive trees before the final climb up to Nuoro affording wonderful views down along the deep valley towards the distant bulk of Monte Albo in the East, and up to Nuoro perched in its saddle between the mountains. If for any reason you miss this train, then there are buses departing from the Macomer Bus station later in the afternoon but they arrive in Nuoro much later than the train.

Upon arrival in Nuoro there is just sufficient time to head straight for the Museo Della Vita e Delle Tradizioni Popolari to see this highly worthwhile Museum before it closes around 6:30pm, after which a stroll back towards the centre of town will see you ambling along Corso Garibaldi around 7pm when the shops are open and the street is full of life.

If all this seems a little rushed then the Museo Della Vita e Delle Tradizioni Popolari can be left till the morning of the second day allowing a more leisurely taste of the city of Nuoro.

Day 3- ALGHERO PLUS QUICK TASTE OF NUORO PROVINCE
The stages of the journey for this day are shown in the table below. To obtain the actual departure and arrival times for each stage, use the links and the information included in accessing timetables.

Arrive Orgosolo
Depart Orgosolo Bus ARST
Arrive Nuoro
Depart Nuoro Bus ARST
Arrive Olbia

Gavoi

The morning of Day 3 can be spent either getting to know Nuoro a little more and maybe going to the top of Mone Ortobene for the inspiring views of the Supramonte rising above the town of Oliena to the South, or by taking a bus to spend a few hours looking around one of the surrounding towns of which there are several alternatives. We have included in the itinerary a visit to the somewhat notorious town of Orgosolo with its coloured and often strongly defiant murales, but a visit could instead be made to Dorgali (handicrafts and views of Supramonte), Gavoi (well preserved historic centre and good eating), Oliena (architecture and renowned red wines), or Orune to name a few.

Time-tables for the buses serving these towns can be found on the ARST website, or from the information posted on the wall of the Bar at the ARST Bus station in Nuoro.

Depending upon how much time you wish to spend in and around Nuoro and what time you need to be back in Olbia there are several different departure and arrival times possible for this day's travel.

If it is decided not to go to Orgosolo (or any other town), then certain transport connections for this day should work also on Sundays. Sunday is not really an ideal day to visit Nuoro, however, and we therefore we wouldn't attempt this Day 3 on a Sunday.
