Itinerary: A5 - Alghero Based - STUNNING SCENERY PLUS REGIONAL CAPITAL (SUMMER VERSION) - Days: 4 Plus

Cala Gonone

This is a version of Itinerary A3 which can only be followed during the summer season as it makes use of the tourist train (Trenino Verde) for the journey down to Cagliari instead of the Ferry. This long but wonderfully scenic train ride, which departs every day between mid June and mid September, passes through some of the more remote and beautiful parts of the Barbagia area of central Sardinia.Travel is by a combination of Train, and Bus and follows a circuit route to cover as much of the Island as possible.

Whilst we have called this a 4 day Itinerary, we have allowed only one full day in the Dorgali area. You may instead decide to extend the itinerary by staying longer in this area overflowing with things to see and do.

Total transport cost for the Itinerary was around Euro 55 per person (Jun 2005), a third of which is the cost of the tourist train.

Only Day 4 would be possible on Sundays.

The following provides a day by day description of the itinerary idea, including also tables indicating the various stages of travel for each day. These tables do not contain the actual departure and arrival times of each leg of the journey which must be accessed directly from the web sites of the individual transport providers. Links are provided to the front pages of the relevant sites, and some notes are provided here which explain how we accessed the relevant timetable information from the sites which do not have English translations.

You can make a print of this itinerary description and fill in the relevant arrival and departure times for each leg in the spaces provided.

Before deciding to follow any one of the Itinerary ideas in this site we strongly recommend that you read also the sections contained herein on

Cala Gonone

This Itinerary presents possibly the fastest way by public transport to get from Alghero to the Dorgali and Cala Gonone area on the Island’s central East coast so that you can have as much time as possible to spend in and around this wonderful area jam packed with potential wilderness activities and indescribable beaches.

With this itinerary you can be sitting (or lying) in the sun on the beach beside the port of Cala Gonone by late morning (with an early start from Alghero) or mid afternoon, gazing south towards the rugged coastline and wilderness planning your program of activities for the next few days.

Day 3- STUNNING SCENERY PLUS REGIONAL CAPITAL (SUMMER VERSION)
The stages of the journey for this day are shown in the table below. To obtain the actual departure and arrival times for each stage, use the links and the information included in accessing timetables.

Depart Lanusei Train FdS (Trenino Verde)

We have listed this as being Day 3, but in fact it would be very hard to tear yourself away from the Dorgali area after having had only 1 full day (Day 2) to enjoy its many possibilities. So if you can afford the time then you might decide to stay at least another day or two.

Genna Silana

Select an early morning bus from Cala Gonone to Dorgali to ensure that you make the ongoing departure from Dorgali for Lanusei a little after 10am. You may find that there is no direct connection between one of the busses from Cala Gonone and this ongoing bus. As a result you may have a little time to kill in Dorgali (unless you have already spent the previous night in Dorgali). Have a wander around the town, or choose a bar in which to relax and read a book.

The bus trip south from Dorgali follows one of the more scenic routes in Sardinia, passing through the wildly rugged Supramonte of Dorgali and Baunei. As the road climbs up towards to the Pass of Genna Silana (1017m) there are ever improving views west towards the Supramonte of Oliena and over the Gorroppu Gorge. After the pass there are views over the deep valley of the Codula di Luna (which finishes at the back of the beach of Cala Luna) and finally spectacular views over the bay of Arbatax and Tortoli as the road descends again passing through the town of Baunei.

After passing across the plains behind Tortolì the route then climbs again to reach the town of Lanusei, where you arrive in the very early afternoon leaving a few hours before the Trenino Verde departs in the mid afternoon. Unfortunately Lanusei will be mostly closed for lunch when you arrive, however you should be able to find a couple of bars open as you wander through town in the direction of the Train Station.

The train ride on the Trenino Verde tourist train between here a Cagliari is very scenic, especially for the first half as the train slowly winds its way around and through some of the

Trenino Verde Route (Ussassai)

more remote and beautiful areas of the central Barbagia region of the Island. When the train arrives in Mandas, it may be necessary to change trains or even change to a bus for certain of the final sections of the journey to Cagliari however the connections should all be easy to make, especially as this train service is designed for tourists. The journey ends in Piazza Republica near the centre of Cagliari sometime after 9pm.

This is a very long travel day, however, and you may decide instead to break it into 2 days by following the Itinerary idea presented in Day 3 of Itinerary A3 to travel from Dorgali to Arbatax where you spend the night, boarding the early morning Trenino Verde departure from there the following morning, with this train arriving in Cagliari in the early afternoon.

Day 4- STUNNING SCENERY PLUS REGIONAL CAPITAL (SUMMER VERSION)
The stages of the journey for this day are shown in the table below. To obtain the actual departure and arrival times for each stage, use the links and the information included in accessing timetables.

Depart Cagliari Train FS
Arrive Sassari
Depart Sassari Train FdS
Arrive Alghero

Cagliari

The final day finishes with a long South to North traverse of the Island back to Alghero. The itinerary allows for this to be done all by train which, although a little slower than the equivalent bus trip, allows to see more of the countryside and is decidedly more comfortable.

Select the departure and arrival times which best suit your needs, however a mid afternoon departure from Cagliari would allow you to make the most of the morning (and enjoy a relaxing lunch) in the city, whilst still arriving in Alghero in good time for dinner.

If you have arrived in Sardinia from London then you have the option of organising your flights such that your return flight departs form Cagliari, avoiding the necessity for this day's travel.
