Gola de Gorropu (Dorgali) | The fastest route by public transport from Alghero to Dorgali/Cala Gonone to spend as much time as possible in this scenically stunning angle of Sardinia. With spectacular coastline, boat trips to indescribable beaches, numerous limestone caves, both short and long distance walks in remote and rugged country, endless opportunities for free climbing and canyoning, the beautiful Gola Gorroppu and the fascinating Nuragic village of Tiscali - the trouble will be to fit in all that you want to see and do in the short time that you have. Travel is mostly by bus with a short leg in train.
Whilst we have called this a 3 day Itinerary, this only leaves 1 full day (Day 2) for activities in an area overflowing with things to see and do. We would recommend, therefore, that you plan to stay longer if you can.
Total transport cost for the Itinerary is around Euro 25 per person (Jun 2005).
The following provides a day by day description of the itinerary idea, including also tables indicating the various stages of travel for each day. These tables do not contain the actual departure and arrival times of each leg of the journey which must be accessed directly from the web sites of the individual transport providers. Links are provided to the front pages of the relevant sites, and some notes are provided here which explain how we accessed the relevant timetable information from the sites which do not have English translations.
You can make a print of this itinerary description and fill in the relevant arrival and departure times for each leg in the spaces provided.
Before deciding to follow any one of the Itineraries or suggestions in this site we strongly recommend that you read also the sections contained herein on Suggestions and Hints, News, and General Disclaimer.

Cala Gonone |
We have listed this as being Day 3, but in fact it would be very hard to tear yourself away from the Dorgali area after having had only 1 full day (Day 2) to enjoy its many possibilities. So if you can afford the time then you might want to stay at least another day or two.
As for the outward journey, two options have been presented and again the first departs and arrives earlier with more breaks but takes longer whilst the second departs and arrives later but involves less travel time.
The first option requires an early morning departure from Cala Gonone to ensure that you make the Fds (ex PANI) bus departing Nuoro around 10am. You will be in Alghero by early afternoon. The second option leaves Cala Gonone after lunch arriving in Alghero in the early evening. Neither option would work on a Sunday.
The only way that this travel day could be modified to work on Sundays would be to depart Cala Gonone in the late afternoon, but an overnight stop would be required at Sassari as you will arrive here too late to get transport on to Alghero. This could be an option however if you have a flight out of Alghero (Fertilia) the following morning and wanted to spend as much time as possible in the Dorgali area.
Alternatively, if flight connections allow, it is possible to proceed from Dorgali to Olbia (See Itinerary O2 Day 3) and pick up a return flight from Olbia instead of backtracking to Alghero.
