The Regional Capital of Sardinia has more than enough things to see and do to keep you occupied for a while, but whatever you choose we would suggest you allow ample time for a couple of long leisurely meals, a stroll through the shop lined streets in the early evening, and a gelato in one of the Piazzas watching life go by. Cagliari is a city to be enjoyed, not just "seen".
The Ferry port (A3, O3, M3, C3) is located right at the front of the city. Exiting the port and turning left onto the street running along the water-front (Via Roma) will take you to the slightly shabby looking tree filled Piazza Matteotti with the Bus Station (from where the ARST buses and now also the FdS (ex PANI) and TT buses depart) located on the South side and the Train Station (FS) straight ahead on the west side (A3, O3, C1, C2, C3).
The Tourist Office, located in the middle of Piazza Matteotti, is usually able to provide maps of the city (or you can look for a map on the net before you arrive) accommodation options (of which there is an ever expanding list - even if some of the B and B are a bit removed from the centre of town) and a booklet in English explaining many of the sites to see. See also our Activities section which contains some ideas for things to do based out of Cagliari.
The FdS bus arriving from Ulassai (M3) makes several stops in and around Cagliari before terminating in the side street beside the ARST Bus Station next to Piazza Matteotti. You will know when you are arriving as the Bus runs along Via Roma in front of the Port area before arriving at Piazza Matteotti.
The Trenino Verde from Arbatax and Lanusei (A5, O5, C4), on the other hand, arrives at the FdS train station which is located in Piazza Republica to the North East of the Port. Best to arrive here with a map. To get to the port from here is a 15 minute walk South along Via Dante, right into Via S. Lucifero then left into Via Sonnino. At the little roundabout in Via Sonnino veer right into Via XX Settembre and follow this street until you arrive at Via Roma which runs along the front of the port. Alternatively, you could catch a local (orange) bus number 30 or 31 which run down Via Dante stopping opposite the FdS train station, and terminating in Piazza Matteotti in front of the FS train station.
