Description
With spectacular coastal scenery, boat trips to beautiful beaches, numerous caves to visit, both short and long distance walks in remote and rugged country, endless opportunities for free climbing and canyoning, the beautiful Gola Gorroppu and the fascinating Nuragic village of Tiscali - it is not hard to spend several days in and around this area.
The small village of Cala Gonone itself, the original part of which huddles around the port at the base of the mountain which separates it from the rest of Sardinia, has a vast assortment of hotels, B and B, apartments and the like, and an agriturismo wonderfully located high up on the side of the mountain overlooking the town and the Gulf. Watch out however because in the peak of summer it can be hard to find a room, and in the off season many places close down. In any case the nearby town of Dorgali can be used as a viable (and less tourist full) alternative to Cala Gonone, even if it isn't on the waterfront.
The tourist office and many of the hotels can help arrange walking or 4WD excursions into the nearby Supramonte including visits to Gola Gorroppu and the Nuragic village of Tiscali, whilst boat hire, boat trips and diving tours can all be organised at the port. There are also several great walks in the area that can be attempted without a guide, but never underestimate the difficulties of navigating in these mountains where trail markings are very few whilst animal tracks abound, and where water sources are extremely scarce.
Buses arrive and depart from a stop in Via Colombo (behind the port and heading up to the left) and also make a stop in front of the small tourist office in Via Del Bue Marino, which is also only a short walk from the port. Tickets can be bought at the Newsagent (Edicola) located on the right heading up Via Colombo from behind the port, or at the bar located in the pine trees near the corner of Via Colombo and Via Del Bue Marino. Maps of the town can be found on the net.
