Dorgali is a pleasant town (if rather quiet) in which to wander for an hour or so or sit and watch life go on, and it can make a good alternative base to Cala Gonone if you arrive well out of the beach season when Cala Gonone is decidedly quiet (ie almost completely closed - although this is changing). Even if you arrive in the beach season Dorgali can make for a more peaceful but viable alternative to the increasing popularity of Cala Gonone, given that the two are linked by several buses a day (about 20 mins each way but not on Sundays) and many of the activities organised out of Cala Gonone can also be organised out of Dorgali. It is even possible to walk from Dorgali to Cala Gonone (or better still direct to Cala Luna) passing through the original foot tunnel excavated at the close of the last century which opens out to give wonderful views over Cala Gonone and the Gulf of Orosei. Only attempt this if you are properly prepared however.
Dorgali itself is located on the side of a mountain directly beneath limestone cliffs and with views west towards the Supramonte. The town is relatively small and easy to find your way around, but to make it easier maps can be found on the net.
There is no bus station in Dorgali. Buses arriving and departing will often stop at several locations around the town however the principle stop is situated in Via Lamarmora across the road from the Carabinieri Station and this is the only stop to use if you are changing buses. It is easy to recognise this stop as the bus will climb uphill through several narrow residential streets and then turn left onto a wider main street with shops on the right and the Carabinieri Station on the left. Tickets can be bought from the newsagent a short distance downhill from the bus stop on the left, or from a couple of bars around town. If you are arriving from Cala Gonone and need to change buses at Dorgali (A3, A4, A5, O3, O4, O5, M2, M3, C3, C4) be aware that (being all buses operated by ARST) the connections should be guaranteed, and you can usually buy a ticket valid for the full journey in Cala Gonone. If instead you are on route to Nuoro then there should be no need to change buses at Dorgali.
Walking up Via Lamarmora from the bus stop you will find several handicraft shops and the tourist information office on the right (which, as usual, has free maps of the town and also of Cala Gonone but, also as usual, may not be open all year). A bit further on you arrive at the intersection of Corso Umberto, which is a wider street heading downhill to the right also containing several shops and bars.
There are a couple of Hotels in the town, and several B and B opening up which provide an alternative.
